Welcome to the Devil’s Inquisitor website – prepare for some provocation with a purpose.
The essence of this website is based on one simple belief:
The Future We Face Rests On The Choices You Make©
I believe this to be the most honest, open and transparent statement you will EVER hear (read my article on H.O.T.), so take a moment to FEEL what it means for you.
What this phrase is saying is that the future WE are going to get depends upon the choices YOU make from today. The way you choose to live your life now and into the future WILL determine our collective future so the question is, “What do I want that future to be?”
Background
Whether you agree with it or not, there is a growing consensus that human civilisation has reached a ‘tipping point’. We are reaching the limit of what the planet is able to provide given the size of the human population and the level of consumption.
The problems that threaten what philosopher Hans Jonas calls “the possibilities of human life on the planet” would not exist if it was understood and agreed that we can’t CONSUME more than the planet can provide; that DESTROYING any species will have knock-on effects elsewhere in nature’s intricate web, and that EVERYTHING has the right to a decent existence (including all animal and plant species).
My belief, formed as a result of the extensive research I have undertaken, is that ALL of our problems are the result of just TWO exclusively-human traits:
- GREED
- NAÏVE BELIEF IN INFINITE GROWTH
Every other problem we have is a ‘distraction’ and that’s it. That doesn’t mean these ‘distractions’ aren’t important – they really are. What I mean is that they wouldn’t exist if the two human traits above didn’t exist.
Instead we have collectively created a world in which GREED and a NAÏVE BELIEF IN INFINITE GROWTH are the predominant human traits.
As the economist Thorstein Veblen noted in 1898 in his work ‘Theory of the Leisure Class’,
“possession of wealth… becomes the conventional basis for esteem”
We are encouraged to admire and respect people who have ‘succeeded in life’; who have accumulated enormous wealth; who have ‘done well’. We are encouraged to aspire to gaining the same level of ‘success’. Material possessions govern how we feel about ourselves, and we obtain gratification from having more than our neighbour.
Why do we need Devil’s Inquisitor?
Devil’s Inquisitor is dedicated to helping you answer the question, “What do I want that future to be?” from a place of understanding and awareness of the problems we face and the likely consequences of our current choices. It is intended to reframe what you think and challenge your perceptions. It is intended to offer practical ways to make the changes necessary for our survival.
Every article on this website ends with a question – giving you the opportunity to stop whatever you’re doing and take a moment to think about what you’ve read and what it means for you.
Some articles suggest an exercise that you can do on your own, with your children and family, or with other groups.
